In early 2003, SJR Architects were handed an unusual task. Would we oversee the client’s Part Qualified Architect daughter in the design of a contemporary dwelling on a garden plot within the Park Conservation area of Hartlepool? Being no strangers to client’s demands, the commission was accepted. The plot had permission for 2 detached houses; however, the client wanted 1 large open plan property with a swimming pool, retaining the large, mature garden area.
The final design incorporated a flat roof, rendered parapetted walls with panels of red cedar boarding and Scandinavian commercial aluminium curtain walling.
Due to the sites private location and the foresight of the local planning authority, planning approval was granted with minimal delay. SJR Architects then translated the client’s and his daughter’s dream into reality by preparing detailed construction drawings, specifications and schedules to allow the on-site works to commence and the original design to be translated into reality.
3 years after its completion, the house now sits comfortably in its mature garden setting; the careful detailing has ensured the cedar boarding has faded to a beautiful even silver grey and the large areas of curtain walling and sky-lighting ensure a high penetration of natural light into the open plan interior.
