SJR Architects were commissioned by Sunderland based Hallgate Construction, who were appointed by Middlesbrough Golf Club as Design and Build Contractors, to extend and refurbish the changing rooms, lounges and entrance area of the Club House.
The original build had evolved in a piece-meal fashion over a number of years around an original farm house building, resulting in various flat roof levels, differing brick types and levels within the building.
The design solution involved replacing the flat roofs with maintenance-free tiled pitched roofs to give the building a cohesive form. The members lounge was doubled in size; a curved form being employed to link the previously disjointed spaces, with a full height curved panoramic window giving members’ uninterrupted views of the course.
A new Secretaries Office, together with fully accessible entrance area and ramped approach was the final element to bring the premises, in line with the Golf Club’s reputation, as one of the premier clubs in the North East of England.
